FCT Golf Association Takes Game To Secondary Schools For Talents Hunt By Nelly Robinson In a bid to live up to its mandate and charge to bring sports to the grass roots in FCT and develop active youth participation in Golf, the FCT just inaugurated Golf Association Board has successfully organized and hosted its first Inaugural Kitty for its members in Abuja, BSNSports.com.ng reports. The ceremony which took place on Wednesday at IBB International Golf and Country Club, Aso Drive Maitama Abuja saw Mohammed Suleiman emerge the overall best gross of the tournament while Lady Captain Julie Acholonu came out as best Nett in the veteran ladies category. Speaking to newsmen before the award and dinner night of the ceremony, the Chairman of the Board Engr. Oladapo Rotimi Mohammed stated that his board desire to make Golf a household name starts with the plan to introduce the game as part of the secondary school curriculum in FCT. He said: “We plan to take golf to all the Area Councils in the FCT through the secondary schools, the main agenda of this board is to take this game to the grass roots, to let them know that this game is not only for the rich. Golf is not just a game of Pleasure; it’s also a game for Business. The business aspect of it comes up after the games when you relax to discuss with fellow golfers” On the plan to utilize the green Areas in Abuja for Golf Course, the board is yet to commence this moves to the FCT Minister, but categorically stated that the notion of golf being an expensive game was wrong pointing that with as low as N200.00, individual can have active participation and membership to the Association. The break down to this interpretes that N75.000.00 annual registration fee amounts thus daily. Also at the press parley was Dr. Mohammed Sani Laden of FCT secondary Education Board, Agbor Clinton and Suleiman Yusuf Secretary of the board who pointed out that setting up a clean golf holes and course in the secondary schools are very easy to achieve with the land mask and perimeters in our schools with a bid to create short throws “golf is one of the cheapest games to develop in secondary schools. You can create clean holes just 3 and play short games” He called on the media and individuals to show active interest and participation in the game to learn the modus and terminologies. Performing the Award presentation ceremony to the successful participants, the Chairman of Board of Trustees of IBB International Golf and country Club Gen. IBM Haruna Rtd lauds the initiative of the Association on the annual Kitty competition saying this will lead to golf expansion in Abuja “Playing golf exercises all your physical being, moral being and makes you come out developed in all honesty and integrity. This is what just 6 hours per day can build in any person playing the game” he expresses appreciation to the Hon. Minister of FCT Mallam Bello Mohammed represented at the ceremony by Director FCT sports Department Dilichukwu Onyedimma. Distinguished Senator Anosike a participant and award recipient at the ceremony gave and announced a financial donation to the board as a support to have the tournament begin a yearly event just as Lovett Ilobe called on parents to allow as well as introduce their children to the game of golf early in life so to build, nurture and develop passion for the sports “With the FCT golf Association board coming on board right now, we have quite a load on our hands. Tiger Wood started at the age of 3 years, maybe because his parents encouraged him and the society offered him the facility. So we are trying to borrow from what the developed society has done. There are some parents who understand what golf is all about just like football. My children are registered at the age of 8 years. So when they grow up, they can make up their mind what they want to do” Lovett has been playing Golf for more than 15 years
