FCT inaugurates 27 sports associations ....Chairmen promise brighter future for sports By Olusola ‘Jide In a bid to develop sports in the nation’s capital, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) on Thursday inaugurated 27 Sports Associations by the Permanent Secretary of FCT, Mr Christian Ohaa. The inauguration was held at the Cinema Hall, Cyprian Centre for Arts and Culture in Abuja. In his remarks the FCT permanent secretary, Mr Christian Ohaa charged the newly elected sports association officials to develop and implement all their programs ‘’I urge the newly elected board members to ensure the full implementation of their planned programs and develop sports in FCT’’ he said According to the FCT Sports Director, Chief Mrs Dilichikwu Onyendinma is confident the new boards will fashion out ways to develop sports in the FCT. “Sports will never be the same again in FCT with these kind of people we have in the various associations, we are going to have a meeting with all the chairmen to map out the plans and activities that will keep the youths busy and how we can improve grassroots sports in the nation’s capital” The acting secretary of the Social Development Secretariat, Mallam Bashir Muhammad reaffirmed the commitment of the board to support the associations when they are being called upon to do so. Some of the Sports Association inaugurated are;Chess, Judo, Basketball, Cycling, Hockey, Handball, Boxing, Shooting, Scrabble, Karate, Crickets among others. Elections were conducted in all the Associations where Chairmen and Vice-chairmen emerged. In boxing association, a veteran FCT Sports journalist, Mr. Segun Ogunjinmi emerged Vic Chairman while Rear Admiral Adeniyi Osumowo is bagged Championship position. In the same vein, Chess conducted elections at the venue, Efemuai Odafe Benedict was voted chaiman of the Association while another experienced journalist Cosmas Nzodinma become vice chairman.
