Fear Grips NFF As Super Falcons Face Free-Scoring Cote d'Ivoire In AWCON Qualifier
By Niyi Busari
The failure of the Super Falcons to qualify for the 2020 Olympics still haunts the Nigeria Football Football Federation (NFF) as they have concluded plans to rejig the technical crew of the nine-time African champions.
The overwhelming result of the Lady Elephants who are the next opponents of the Super Falcons after defeating their opponents (Niger Republic) 11-0 and 20-0 on aggregate sent fears into the spine of the NFF.
Meanwhile, the Super Falcons on Sunday lost 0-1 to Ghana before qualifying to face Ivory Coast after beating the Black Queens 2-1 on aggregate. Recall that the Lady Elephants defeated the African champions and stopped Nigeria from picking the Women Football Olympic ticket. To this end, the NFF thought it wise to rejig the technical crew of the team to stand a chance of taking a pound of flesh.
"However, General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi contended that there is room for improvement in the team’s entire output over the two legs of the fixture with the Black Queens, and that the NFF has concluded arrangements to reinvigorate the team technically, and also strengthen the playing body." The statement from the NFF reads.
It added, “I will start by congratulating the team for the victory over the Black Queens of Ghana. It was a sweet one given the rivalry between our two countries in the game, which dates back to 70 years. Notwithstanding, there are deficiencies that we must deal with squarely and without any ambiguity in order that the team will be ready for the challenges ahead.
“The Super Falcons can, and should, exhibit far greater marksmanship. We have the players at home and abroad to outrun and outplay any team on the African continent, and even compete favourably on the world stage. That is why we have to make the move to reinvigorate the team ahead of the final round of qualifiers against Cote d’Ivoire. The rejuvenation is with an objective for better focus, commitment and productivity.”
