Federer Defeats Serena in Mixed Double Match of the Hopman Cup

There has long been a debate over whether Roger Federer or Serena Williams is greater but the Swiss added another feather to his cap in what’s likely to be the only meeting between the pair during their professional careers.

The 37 year olds faced off in a mixed doubles encounter at the exhibition event, with Federer and partner Belinda Bencic defeating American duo Williams and Frances Tiafoe 4-2 4-2 to secure a win for Switzerland.

Both of the legendary stars – who have a combined 43 Grand Slam titles between them – have won the Hopman Cup on two previous occasions but only Federer will have a chance at adding a third after team USA lost their opening two matches.

While the focus was on the two icons of the sport, the most entertaining exchange came early in the second set with Federer and Tiafoe both tagging each other.

The match will likely have little impact on their respective seasons but it was Federer who can claim bragging rights in the battle of the GOATs.
