...becomes First African Women team to qualify for FIBA WWC 1/4 Finals By Niyi Busari D'Tigress became the first African women basketball team to qualify for the quarter finals of the FIBA Women World cup after beating the world number 20, Greece by 56-57 points at the ogoing FIBA Women world cup in Tenerife, Spain. On the road to the quarter finals D'Tigress who was rated 34 by FIBA had beaten the world number 7, Turkey in their second group game, defeated world number 15, Argentina in their last group game and on Wednesday in a well contested tension soak game, the Nigeria senior women national basketball team out-dunked world number 20 Greece to pick one of the four quarter final tickets. It was perfect succour for the head coach of the D'Tigress, Otis Hughley whose family was involved in an auto crash 24 hour before the game. In the same vein, a perfect birthday gift for the minister of youth and sports, Barrister Solomon Dalung, who, coincidentally celebrate his 54th birthday on Wednesday (today). D'Tigress maintained a slim lead in the second quarter by 27-26 points, advanced with a better point margin in the third quarter by 48-37 points. It was so close, but victory was achieved. It was a game of fluctuating fortunes. Three victories in a row! All hail Nigeria’s heoines – D’Tigress. They are living up to their name, devouring every prey that came to their way since Sunday. They now join the four group leaders and playoff qualifiers, Japan in Friday’s quarter finals.
