Germany 1 Nigeria 0 By Niyi Busari A second-half strike by Stefanie Saunders gave Germany a 1-0 victory over Nigeria in their opening Group D match at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup France 2018 in Saint-Malo on Monday. A goalless first half produced little between the two sides, who previously contested the final of this competition back in 2010 and 2014. Germany made a bright start at the Stade de Marville, but Nigeria looked more confident in the latter stages of the opening period. The contest came to life after the break, with the decisive moment occurring on 69 minutes when the Europeans claimed the lead following a corner and resulting header that struck the crossbar. The ball fell to Saunders, who knocked home from close range to put Germany in front. FC Robo attacker Rashidat Ajibade, who was sad about the loss but admitted that Germany women national team are a good side. She however, proud of her teammates performance despite the slim loss. Rashidat who took to her verified Twitter handle after the match posted: "Disappointing result today against a good 🇩🇪team but feel proud of our🇳🇬 team and lots of positives to take into the next game .Thank you for all the great support 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿We go again on Thursday🇳🇬🇭🇹 ! #Togetherwearestronger #RA08 #U20WWC #womeninfootball." The loss made it the third the Nigerian U20 lost to their German counterparts after three meetings at the competition. Having came second best of U20 Women's World Cup on two occasions the Falconets need to win their next two games against Haiti and China to stand a chance of proceeding to the knockout stages.
