The Super Eagles delivered an excellent performance to secure a 2-1 win over Cape Verde in a thoroughly enjoyable game at the Estádio Municipal Adérito Sena in Mindelo.
Nigeria were missing eight UK-based stars, including seven starters from the team that defeated Liberia 2-0 in Lagos on Friday, but still had enough quality to tame the Blue Sharks.
Here’s how the Super Eagles fared against the Cape Verde Islands:
Maduka Okoye: He was left exposed by a defence that played a high line. Rushed out of his goal sometimes which almost cost the team. 5.5/10.
Shehu Abdullahi: Struggled defensively and didn’t contribute much to the team’s attack. 4/10.
Kenneth Omeruo: The Leganes star savoured his defensive partnership with Awaziem until the hosts broke through to net the opening goal. 7/10.
Jamilu Collins: A man of the match display from the FC Paderborn defender. Collins provided the cross which led to the first goal and was impressive all through. 7/10.
Chidozie Awaziem: Should have won a penalty in the first half for the Super Eagles when a high boot from an overzealous defender ensured he needed the medics' attention. Defended well. 6/10.
Innocent Bonnke: Put up an above average performance on his debut for the Super Eagles. Helped shield the defence well, though didn’t offer much going forward. 5/10.
Ahmed Musa: Wasted a great chance to make it 2-1 early in the second half thanks to a promising cross by Victor Osimhen but his shot was tame. The Cape Verdeans dealt with his pace when he did surged forward. Substituted off in the second half. 5/10.
Moses Simon: Not a good performance from the winger. He will need to improve on his crosses and show more. 5/10 consistency.
Kingsley Michael: The Bologna midfielder was lively for the Super Eagles and drew a few tackles from the hosts. Released Osimhen with a defence splitting pass in the 65th minute but the latter's cross was not utilized by a teammate. 5.5/10.
Chidera Ejuke: A lively display from the CSKA Moscow winger. Grabbed his chance well and clearly have a future in the team. 7.5/10.
Victor Osimhen: The Napoli man was at the right place to stab home the Super Eagles opener, his first goal in this World Cup qualifying series. 8/10.
The Substitutes
Terem Moffi: Had no spectacular moment that threatened the hosts in attack. 4/10.
Henry Onyekuru: Had a chance to score few minutes after his introduction. A lively cameo from the winger. 4/10.
Paul Onuachu: Took the place of Victor Osimhen in the 83rd minute. Had a shot blocked late on. 3/10.
Zaidu Sanusi: Not Rated.
