First Opi 14km Marathon Race Holds in Enugu State Marathon runners during a race in Nigeria By Amaechi Agbo In Enugu State, South East Nigeria, a new birth of sporting activity is set to begin in Opi, a popular town in the state as the maiden edition of first Opi Marathon Race holds on October 17. The 14km marathon race which is the first of its kind both in the town and Nsukka Local Government Area, will see men and women battle for various prizes. Speaking with our correspondent, the organiser of the race, Mr Nnaemeka Eleje said the race will take off from popular Opi Junction along Enugu-Makurdi Expressway and stop at Queen of the Rosary Secondary School, Nsukka and return to the take-off point. Explaining further, Mr Nnaemeka, popularly known as Pele (named after legendary Brazilian footballer) because of his football prowess, said the need to host the race was born out of the desire to keep the people in the town and its surrounding heathy. “We are just coming out of covid-19 lockdown and one basic fact it that many people added weight during this short period of enforced rest. Many of our people have not realised the importance of exercise in our daily schedule. “It is against this backdrop that I resolved to hold a massive Marathon Race. A race from Opi junction to Holy Rosary Retreat and Conference Centre. “It's energy-sapping but mouth-watering benefits attached. Every participant not only has a reward but also stands a chance to win huge prices as well. Mr Nnaemeka who disclosed various prices for the race added that he is sponsoring the race from his personal account. “I don’t have a sponsor yet but I am not discouraged. I believe this is absolutely necessary for our people and that is why I am coming out with the race,” he told our correspondent in Nsukka Saturday Both men and women aged between 15 and 40 years are expected to take part in the competition.
