The Black Satellites have won the title in 1993, 1999 and 2009 and Uganda will be seeking a first trophy at this level. They won their first title after beating Cameroon in 1993. The 1999 edition saw them win their second on home soil after edging the Flying Eagles of Nigeria 1-0. Ten years later, having won the sub-regional WAFU Zone B Cup, Ghana beat Cameroon once again to lift the trophy before going on to rule the world. In the third-place game, Gambia beat Tunisia on penalties to take home bronze.
