Ghana FA Confirms Ayew As Captain, As Gyan Exits
By Editor
The Ghana Football Assocation (GFA) has re-named Swansea City star Andre Ayew as the captain of the Ghana national team ending any hopes of Asamoah Gyan returning to lead the Black Stars.
The GFA made a shock announcement on Sunday more than one year after Ayew was handed the armband ahead of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations which sparked some controversy.
Coach Kwesi Appiah stripped Gyan of the captaincy ahead of the tournament in Egypt which divided opinions in the country over the decision to make Ayew the leader for the tournament.
Gyan himself protested the decision saying coach Appiah had disrespected him by handing Ayew the armband and retired from the national team before he was being forced by the country's President Nana Akufo-Addo to reverse the decision.
It was thought under new coach Charles Akonnor the decision could be revisited with Gyan returning to the fold to lead the Black Stars but the GFA has ended it by confirming Ayew as the substantive leader.
"The technical team of the senior national team, the Black Stars upon a broad consultation has maintained Andre Ayew as captain of the Black Stars," the Ghana FA statement read.
"The Swansea City attacker who led Ghana to the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt, maintains his position as leader of the team despite changes at the technical realm of the senior national team."
