Renowned monarch, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi III, the Alaafin Oyo was the father of the day as Ridwan ‘Scorpion’ Oyekola picked up a cash prize of N1 million alongside the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophy after emerging the best boxer at the 15th edition of the GOtv Boxing Night.
Making a return to Ibadan, Oyo state capital where it held in March 2017, hundreds of boxing fans trooped to the Indoor Sports Hall of the Obafemi Awolowo (formerly Liberty) stadium on Sunday, July 29, to witness the best of boxing.
Of the 14 boxers on the night, Ridwan ‘Scorpion’ Oyekola showed great strength and boxing skills to defeat Prince ‘Lion’ Nwoye by unanimous decision in the National Lightweight challenge, as he emerged the best boxer of the night
In the National Light Heavyweight challenge, Daniel “Big Shark” Emeka emerged winner in 1:54sec with a knockout win against his opponent Sulaimon ‘Olags’ Adeosun, but the national light welterweight bout between Vincent ‘Dada’ Essien and Segun ‘Showboy’ Olalehin was ruled a no contest by the referee in round five.
One of fan’s favourites and current ABU welterweight champion, Olaide ‘Fijaborn’ Fijabi was made to sweat before defeating Kazeem “Iberu” Ariyo in the national challenge bout by unanimous decision after eight rounds.
In the first international title bout of the night, African Boxing Union (ABU) lightweight champion, Oto “Joe Boy” Joseph of Nigeria retained his title by beating Ghana's Nathaniel Nukpe by unanimous decision after 12 rounds.
However, it was Ibadan based boxer Akeem “Dodo” Sadiku of Nigeria who stole the show in the second international title bout as he defeated Franc Houanvoegbe of Benin Republic by technical knock out in round two of their international light middleweight challenge.
However, BSN Sports earlier reported that Nigeria's Rilwan “Baby Face” Babatunde picked up a cash prize of N1 million after emerging the best boxer at the 14th edition of the GOtv Boxing Night held inside the Indoor Sports Hall, National stadium, Lagos on Saturday, April 14.
