The House Committee on Sports has ordered the Kida-led Nigeria Basketball Federation (NBBF) to offset the outstanding allowance and bonuses they're owing the Nigeria Women's Basketball national team, D'Tigress, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
The Committee Chaired by Hon Olumide Osoba on Monday pronounced after the Secretary General of the Federation, Afolabi-Oluwayemi Olabisi, read the petition written by the former D'Tigress General Manager, Mactaben Amachree explaining in details how much the Kida-led NBBF is owing D'Tigress.
Olumide confronted Col. Sam Ahmedu who had appeared on national TV claiming that the Federation didn't owe D'Tigress allowance to admit or deny what was read from the petition.
"I want to ask you (Sam Ahmedu) because you're on AIT the other day speaking on this matter and now that you're before the House Committee can you clear the air on whether the former NBBF President, Musa Kida owed D'Tigress money or not? Because you people said you don't owe any official money." Olumide asked Sam Ahmedu.
"Did you hear when the Secretary read what Mactaben claimed that the NBBF is owing huge amount of money? He asked rhetorically.
"Did you also owed the driver's and volunteer's allowances as well?
"No, not all. Emmm, yes, I am not in position to say whether we owed the driver or not because I was not the one in charge but I was in the camp." Col. Sam Ahmedu responded
Hon. Olumide continued, "But you were on AIT and you were so quick to speak on the matter that you were the only one who knew exactly what went down but now that you're in front of the Parliament all of a sudden, you don't have any idea of what happened.
Reacting to the question on whether or not they're owing, the NBBF Secretary said, "Then sir, I was not the Secretary General, I came in 2019 but when I asked the former Secretary General Chimezie (that was in charge then), he admitted that the NBBF is owing D'Tigress. Chimezie, the former Secretary also confirmed that they were owing volunteer allowance."
"Do you owe the travel tickets or not? Osoba asked Secretary and she answered, "Yes, the NBBF is owing."
"D'Tigress came up with three prayers, we have discussed about the team meeting with the President of Nigeria but the NBBF said they don't have the power. We also talked about the $230,000 adopt an athlete money in bank and that has also been resolved. What we are saying now is that the Kida-led NBBF is owing D'Tigress the sum of $59,000 and should find a way of paying them the money.
"Having come to the conclusion that the NBBF is owing D'Tigress, I want to move that by all means they should find a way of raising this money and pay those who deserve to be paid." One of the members House Committee on Sports stated.
The Chairman therefore came up with the final judgement and said, "We give the NBBF four weeks to offset the debts."
Meanwhile, Col Sam Ahmedu who had on national TV denied that the NBBF is owing D'Tigress admitted that they're actually owing D'Tigress adding that they deserved to be paid. "I admit that the NBBF owing D'Tigress and I am not here to argue about it.
Recall that D'Tigress protested on a viral video demanding that all their outstanding allowance and bonuses be paid, a bus be made available for the team, meeting with the President of Nigeria, a befitting Arena among others.
D'Tigress won the Afrobasket title for three consecutive times with the lastest in Cameroon in 2021.
