Injury Halted My Barcelona Ambition - Amuneke

By Sampson Adedeji

Former Nigeria's Super Eagles winger Emmanuel Amuneke has explained the reason why he failed to reach his peak during his time as a Barcelona player.

Amuneke moved to the Catalan club from the Portuguese Primera Liga side Sporting Lisbon in 1994 after successful African Cup Of Nations and World Cup outings, BSN Reports.

The fast winger was unable to replicate his fine form for the club due to injury he sustained in the first season with the club.

"I arrived in Barcelona and saw players like Guardiola, Popescu, Stoichkov, Figo or Ronaldo. It was a big change for me.

"I had to adapt to this new environment, ”said the current coach of Misr Lel Makkasa in Egypt. “ It was a big challenge, a bigger environment and a lot more pressure and responsibility.

"I had to adapt, but I was unlucky enough to hurt myself after my first season. I never had the chance to show what I had inside me," he said.

Amuneke played 19 matches for Barcelona and scored just only once.
