DISREGARD ALL YOU HAVE READ OR HEARD, LOBI STARS HAVE NOT WON THE LEAGUE- NPFL Club owner
By Wale Ajayi
One of the club owners in the Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, frowned at the 'rumour' flying around that LMC and Club Owners meeting agreed to crown Lobi Stars 2017/18 NPFL champions.
He said the meeting will still continue (today) Friday because their has not been agreement between them on who wins the league. So, he wondered where the news is emanating from.
Though it was the decision might turn out the most difficult decision taken by the league managers since the emergence of the league management company (LMC).
One of the much awaited meeting planned to fashion a way forward for Nigeria footbal ended in a logjam, despite all the rumours making the rounds, that Lobi stars FC have been unanimously crowned champions of the 2017/2018 Nigeria professional football league season.
He is a chairman of one of the top clubs, he is a major actor among the decision makers and he has categorically kicked against any decision that will crown Lobi stars as league champions with fourteen matches left to play this season.
"That is total bullshit" he said without minding his use of words.
." Who the hell is going about flying this kite when the meeting is still ongoing?
"We are back to our rooms after a long day of deliberation, we will return to the deliberation table on Friday to continue where we stopped."
"This could lead to a revolution in our football, we can't come this far with fourteen matches left to play then decide to give the league to Lobi stars.
"As it stands presently, on the NPFL log, the top 6 teams are in, with a chance to win the league. This is football where just anything can happen. The team in sixth position can go on a run of two.away victories, while the team occupying the top spot can go on a run of two straight home defeats.
"I am not saying this option was not discussed, it was but we also looked at 5 other alternatives which are as good as this one. The league cannot go to Lobi stars on a platter, we all started this race, we must be ready to finish it together.
These are some of the option seriously under consideration."
I. Crown Lobi stars as league champions and agree that no team will be relegated. Under this arrangement, the four promoted teams from the NNL will increase the number in the NPFL to 24 and we will have to play an abridged league of two groups next season.
Many are not okay with this too, because they feel the five teams behind Lobi stars on the log still stand a good chance of challenging.for the trophy
2. There is also the question.of the AITEO Cup which is directly under the pureview of the NFF not LMC.
"Are we saying the second placed team, (Akwa united) automatically qualifies for the AITEO Cup? What then happens to some of us that see that competition as our best route to playing continental football in a year when there will be the general elections in Nigeria?" He asked.
"Football is a huge political tool and most of our governors will be using the performance of the clubs as a silent political campaign tool so you now expect us to let go this opportunity?
"Let's all remember that this problem was not a creation of the club owners, we must not be made to suffer the consequences.
"We are ready and willing to find the best possible solution to this logjam but woe betides that man who wants to graciously hand the league over to Lobi stars.
"We will resist that temptation unless it seem the only way out of this logjam he concluded," he concluded.
