Man City 2-1 Borussia Dortmund: Hosts rescued by Foden at the death

Phil Foden scored a last gasp goal as Man City emerged 2-1 winners over a stubborn Borussia Dortmund in a Champions League tie stageed on Tuesday night.  While City dominated the earlier exchanges, it was Dortmund who had the real threats on goal with keeper Ederson forced to come off his line to clear off the ball ahead of Ansgar Knapff; the 19-year-old who is making his first-ever start for Dortmund. Dortmund then had a glorious chance to take the lead four minutes later when a brilliant pass by Manuel Ikanji bypassed the entire City midfield to drop for Jude Bellingham who moved it on to his left foot in the penalty area before forcing Ederson to a smart save. The visitors were however punished in the 19 minutes by Kevin de Bruyne who capitalized on a mistake from Emre Can after being put through by Riyard Mahrez. City thought they had earned a penalty in the 28th minute when Can was penalized for a high boot on Rodri but VAR overturned the decision. Dortmund then thought they had restored parity minutes to the break when Bellingham put the ball at the back of the net but he was penalized for fouling Ederson in the process much to the amazement of the visitors’ bench; the half ending with De Bruyne goal being the difference. Dortmund knew that they had no option but to score in the second half if they had to start on a clean slate heading into the second leg and their intentions were laid bare when Erling Haaland shot straight at keeper Ederson just three minutes after the resumption when he could have done better. As Dortmund tested City's resolve so we're the hosts who had brought in Gabriel Jesus for Bernado Silva earlier on to boost their attack. Phil Foden was to force keeper Hitz to a smart save with De Bruyne missing the target by a whisker as City tried to extend their lead. When all was heading to a City win, captain Marco Reus way to come with the equalizer six minutes from time. Bellingham began the move in midfield, playing the ball forward to Haaland. With his back to goal, he played a splendid first-time pass around the corner into space for Reus to chase and the German-made no mistake after finding himself through on goal. Drama however was to be left for the final minutes with Foden regaining City's lead after being laid by Gundogan in what was the last serious action of the game.
