Manchester United have been left with a mountain to climb ahead of the return leg of the Europa League last 16 after drawing 1-1 against AC Milan at Old Trafford on Thursday night.
Amad Diallo scored four minutes after his second-half introduction to give United the lead, but a late Simon Kjaer goal ensured the Italians head back home with an away goal advantage.
AC Milan got off the blocks first and managed to put the ball in the back of the net after just five minutes, but Leao's well-taken shot was ruled out for offside.
United responded minutes later with half a chance, with Antony Martial forcing a good save from Donnarumma.
Franc Kessi then thought he had given Milan the lead in the 11th minute with a brilliant strike from just inside the box, but his goal was disallowed after he was adjudged to have handled the ball before scoring.
United found themselves overrun in midfield, with the partnership of Scott McTominay and Nemanja Matic easily blown away by the likes of Kessie and Meite.
Despite being second-best for long spells, United almost took a 38th-minute lead when Harry Maguire managed to sneak unmarked at the far post but could not find the net despite having enough time to find the target.
Solskjaer's side came back for the second half a changed side, and they took the lead four minutes in.
Martial made way for Diallo, and the youngster scored a brilliant header from a Bruno Fernandes ball to give the hosts the lead.
Kessie and Krunic then came close to pulling AC Milan level, but Henderson in goal made good saves to deny them.
The lively Diallo and Fernandes led United's attacks, with the latter providing a perfect ball for Daniel James, but the winger missed a glorious chance to potentially take the tie away from the Italians.
For a moment, Diallo's goal seemed to be enough to give United the victory, but Milan managed to score with a minute to go.
Kjaer managed to wrestle free and head home Krunic's corner, and despite getting a hand on it, it beat Henderson and hit the roof of the net for a 1-1 draw.
