Mikel's Former Turkish Club, Trabzonspor Get Uefa One-Season Ban

Former Super Eagles captain, Mikel Obi's former Turkish club, Trabzonspor will not feature in any European competition even if they are crowned champions of Turkey, according to UEFA.

Trabzonspor are topping the Turkish Super Lig with superior goal different with 53 points from 26 matches. Basaksehir, second on the log tied on points (53) with Trabzonspor.

The Turkish Super Lig is due to restart on June 12, but Trabzonspor will not feature in the group stage of the UEFA Champions League should they go on to win the competition after they ran foul of the UEFA financial fair play rules. This means, any team that end in second place behind Trabzonspor (if they end up winning the title) will go on to represent Turkey in the Uefa Champions League.

This sanction will apply for either the 2020-2021 or 2021-2022 seasons.

Mikel Obi cancelled his contract with Trabzonspor after he protested against playing at the height of the Coronavirus Pandemic.

Fellow Nigeria stars Anthony Nwaekeme is still with the club while Ogenyi Onazi was also at the club this season before his transfer to another Turkish club Denizlispor in January.
