The Nigerian Basketball Federation board has warned its referees to refrain from any activity capable of bringing the board and game of basketball to disrepute.
This warning comes on the heel of a purported election being planned by the Nigerian Basketball Referees Council (NBBRC) led by Babatunde Popoola.
In a letter addressed to the body by the NBBF Secretary General, Chimezie Asiegbu, the NBBRC which is an affiliate of the NBBF must recourse to its parent body on any official matter relating to basketball.
“The board notes that the tenure of your current board has lapsed and while there is need to reconstitute a new executive board, this is expected to be done with recourse to the NBBF.”
The NBBF states that the NBBRC which is a professional association whose allegiance should be 100% to the governing body in recent times has been aloof and divisive in its dealings with the federation where their legitimacy is derived.
NBBF therefore warned that “the purported election being planned by your body without recourse to the NBBF is not recognized. The NBBRC is hereby directed to interface with the NBBF in respect of any election being planned.”
In the letter of which a copy was sent to the Federation of International Basketball Federation (FIBA), Federal Ministry of Sports, State Sports Associations and the Referees Council, the NBBF advised that NBBRC should refrain from attending basketball programmes as a body without recourse to the federation.
