Newcastle United 0-0 Liverpool: League leaders held at St James' Park

Newcastle
Liverpool were held to a goalless draw by stubborn Newcastle United in a Premier League game staged at St.James' Park. Jurgen Klopp's men had their chances but a combination of superb goalkeeping and profligate finishing means they will depart Newcastle with just a draw. Newcastle started well and were comfortable on the ball in the opening minutes of the game. Matty Longstaff pinged a fine pass over the top and Wilson was too strong for Phillips as he breezed past him and went for a goal at the near post but Fabinho makes a vital block. The Reds responded, Newcastle half-cleared Alexander-Arnold's cross from the right as Milner elected to drill first time back towards goal but Darlow made a comfortable save low to his left. Ritchie's free-kick was lofted to the back post where Ritchie climbed highest and directed an excellent header towards the far post...only for Alisson to make a sprawling save at full stretch. It was brilliant from Schar as he hooked the ball off the line when Mane had all-but scored after Darlow couldn't grasp Alexander-Arnold's low cross. The draw leaves Liverpool at the top of the table with 33 points, three above second-placed Manchester United who have a game in hand. The Reds' next assignment will be against Southampton at St. Mary's Stadium on 4th January.
