NFF Shuns Nigerians, Says No Plan To Sack Rohr

Following Super Eagles 1-2 loss to Dessert Foxes of Algeria on Sunday in the second semifinal of the ongoing 2019 African Nations Cup in Egypt, millions of Nigerians have been clamouring for the sack of the head coach, Gernot Rohr, BSNSports.com.ng can report.

An owngoal by William Troost-Ekong in the 40the minute gave Algeria the lead while Odion Ighalo converted a penalty to bring Nigeria back into the game. However, Manchester City forward Riyad Mahrez well curled dying minute free kick ensured that the Desert Foxes face Teranga Lions of Senegal in the final of the biennial competition.

Nigerians who want him sacked opined that the Franco-German coach lacked the necessary technical know how and also questioned his substitutions during crucial matches, so, they concluded that he should be sacked. They argued that if a home-based coach (late Stephen Keshi) could win the AFCON title and also took Nigeria to the Round of 16 at the world cup, then Rohr who received more salary has done nothing spectacular.

According to them, the NFF should look for a foreign or home based who is more technically sound and believe in the Nigerian home based players.

However, it was reported that the NFF has insisted that the Super Eagles handler remains to see off his contract which runs till 2022.

Disclosing this to journalists in a chat on Tuesday in Cairo, Nigeria Football Federation's Director of Communications, Ademola Olajire, said though the outcome of the game dealt a great blow to the team, the players are now in good frame of mind to ensure they get something out of the tournament.

Meanwhile, the NFF spokesman also dismissed the rumour of the federation's plan to sack Coach Gernot Rohr. Olajire, stated there is no iota of truth in the development as the NFF is only planning to ensure they retain the coach and also give him more support to do well in his subsequent assignments.
