Nigeria Olympic Gold Medalist Banned For 30 Months By Our Reporter A 30 months ban has been issued to former Paralympic champion and Nigerian Para powerlifter, Paul Kehinde for committing an anti-doping rule violation. According to a statement released by the International Paralympic Committee, Kehinde tested positive for prohibited substances after conducting a urine sample provided out-of-competition on March 9, 2020. Per the regulations of the IPC, hydrochlorothiazide and its metabolite and amiloride are part of substances on the World Anti-Doping Agency 2020 Prohibited List under the class S5 Diuretics and Masking Agents. IPC’s Anti-Doping Director, James Sclater stated that should the athlete had followed the rules, the ban could have been avoided. “This case may have been avoided if the athlete had followed the rules for Therapeutic Use Exemptions (TUEs) and verified that his prescribed medication was prohibited. “The IPC would like to strongly remind all athletes who require the use of a prohibited substance or method, for a diagnosed medical condition, to apply for a TUE in accordance with the WADA ISTUE requirements.” He also mentioned that, Kehinde will not be able to compete from March 9, 2020 to September 8, 2022. Adding that, “results obtained by the Athlete from the date the sample was collected will also be disqualified, with all resulting consequences, including forfeiture of any medals, points and prizes.” Born in Epe, Lagos, Paul Kehinde has won three gold medals in men's powerlifting for Nigeria. He won gold at the Summer Paralympics Games in Rio De Janeiro in 2016, World ParaPowerlifting Championship in Mexico in 2017 and in Commonwealth Games in 2014.
