Nigeria wins 11 medals at African Cycling Championship

By Admin

Lately, every major sporting event seems to be happening in the Northern region of the continent and the Cycling federations are no exception as they converge in Cairo, Egypt for the African Track Cycling Championship. If you are not so familiar with happenings on the home front, one would easily think that Nigeria doesn’t even participate in such sports considering lack of facilities and failure to create the right ambience for athletes, sports men and women over the years.

Let me excite you, at the event that ran from Thursday till today and was put together by the African Cycling Confederation (CAC), Nigeria actually sent a team to this championship and that team won eleven (11) medals - four (4) gold, three (3) silver and four (4) bronze medals at the end of the event. Interesting right?

The event also served as qualifiers to this year’s World Cycling Championships and the Olympic Games in Japan.

Some of the medal winning Nigerians include Grace Ayuba - who won 4 gold medals, Ese Ukpesersye, Rita Owen amongst others.

More details would be known as the medal winning team is expected to return to the country this week.

Team Nigeria had also put on a dominant display when the African Track Cycling Championship was held in Abuja finishing above some favourites like Egypt on the medal standings.
