THOMAS DENNERBY CONFIDENT IN WOMEN'S FOOTBALL IN NIGERIA

By: Eche Amos

Coach of Nigeria's Super Falcons, Thomas Dennerby, has said he is confident in women's football in Nigeria, describing it as one of the best in the world.

The Swedish citizen disclosed this to journalists immediately after the rescheduled Nigerian Women's Football League week two game between Nasarawa Amazons and Bayelsa Queens at the Lafia City Stadium, yesterday.

According to Dennerby, "I have so much confidence in women's football in Nigeria. You have good coaches, good players, and lots of talented players.

"Women's football in Nigeria is one of the best in the world and the future is bright", he revealed.

On the choice of his visit to the Lafia City Stadium, the embattled coach explained thus:

"These two teams(Nasarawa Amazons and Bayelsa Queens) constitute the best clubs in Nigeria for now as they are both champions of the AITEO Cup and Women's League respectively.

"So, you can see that their game today was a good match as it was between two great teams.

"Today, Bayelsa Queens were more natural, and created more scoring chances. Actually, it was a fair game.

"If you choose, that is good. But it's important for me to come out to monitor as many games as possible because when you are the head coach of a national team, you would always try to find individuals that you think would fit into your game plans", the former Hammarby IF and Spårvägens IF of Sweden player added.

Dennerby who was 2004 Swedish Manager of the Year (women's football), pleaded for patience and the collaboration of all stakeholders to enable him and the Super Falcons succeed, following their not-too-impressive performance at the 2019 FIFA Senior Women's World Cup in France, where the team got eliminated at the round of sixteen.

"We are on our way, but not there yet.

"But normally, it's the same fold that everybody, including the administrators, would have to come together on a regular basis, practice together, share ideas together, and keep on working hard as that is the only way to succeed", he concluded.

2019 AITEO Cup winners, Nasarawa Amazons, lost the rescheduled NWFL week Two game 1-2 against Bayelsa Queens, placing the Yenagoa-based team on top of the Group C table, with six points from two matches, while Nasarawa Amazons are third with one point from the same number of games.

Nasarawa Amazons' next game is against Kaduna Babes while Bayelsa Queens will entertain Sunshine Queens of Akure.
