NPFL Players To Undergo Doping Test, Says Dikko

By Sampson Adedeji

The chairman of League Management Company ( LMC) Mallam Shehu Dikko has confirmed that Nigeria Professional Football League players will undergo random doping test after every league match.

The Nigeria league was put on hold on Wednesday due to Corona virus but Dikko said doping will be conducted the moment the league resume, BSN Reports .

"We have been having conversations around that (anti-doping), our rules and regulations are very clear concerning illicit drugs. There are some players we have had to deal with at the club level without coming public, but now, we are going to intensify checks." Dikko told Punch

“Part of what we are going to do is to introduce the spot check, like once in a while, we will send the doctors to a clubs and they will test all the players, once in a while, they will also pick any player at random in match venues and test that player.

"Before the season starts, each player normally goes through drug tests and if they use drugs, it will be detected. But we haven’t seen that in most of the medical records we have with us, because when they know that they are going for that pre-season medical check, if someone is on drugs, he might try to refrain from the drugs until after the test. But the spot checking will put everybody on their toes because they don’t know when and how they would be brought out for the test, so, that could control it.

“Drugs problem is not just NPFL problem, it is the society’s problem and anyone earning what the players are earning can go into drugs. So, we will keep educating them to desist from it,” he concluded.

It's yet to be seen how the players that caught in the act will be punished.
