Osimhen: Surpassing Yekini's Super Eagles Record Is Possible.
By Omolagba Oluwayemi
Sensational striker and Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen has spoken of his desire to be Super Eagles all time scorer in the future.
Osimhen who has four goals to his name since Super Eagles debut against Togo in 2017 believes surpassing Rashidi Yekini's goal scoring record for Nigeria is very possible although will be a little difficult to achieve.
Despite the arrays of strikers that Super Eagles has had in time past, like Obafemi Martins, Emmanuel Emenike, Victor Anichebe, Julius Aghahowa, Odion Ighalo, Yakubu Aiyegbeni, Benedict Akwegbu and host of others, known have never come close to equalling Yekini's highest goal record let alone breaking it.
Yekini scored 37 goals in 58 games for Nigeria and the record stood for more than twenty years.
Victor Osimhen while speaking to the media said: "I've always said for me to fill in the shoes of a legend, the late Rashidi Yekini is kind of heavy for me but I think I'm on the right path towards this direction.
"If I'm injury-free I can achieve this but it's never going to be easy and of course with the confidence, the coach has in me and the fans also support me I think it's achievable.
"For now I want to keep on helping the team, keep on doing well with my club and I'm really looking forward to achieving this feat but it's never going to be easy."
It's going to be much more difficult for Victor especially now that a lot of Super Eagles strikers are equally doing well. The likes of Paul Onuachu, Kelechi Iheanacho, etc are doing well and will make the attacking position more competitive than it used to be years ago when it's almost a one striker thing.
Osimhen will need to be in top shape always if he's to become Super Eagles first choice in the position and after then can start aiming to equal first before breaking Yekini's record but no doubt about Victor's ability, going by what he's done in the past, he's able to recreate the record even less than 10 years
