Paul Onuachu’s Jersey Becomes Fourth Most Expensive In Belgium

Racing Genk of Belgium attacker, Paul Ebere Onuachu has received another feather to his growing cap of honour, as his jersey at the club he joined last season has become the fourth costliest in the multi-lingual European country, BSNSports.com.ng gathered. So soon after Onuachu shot into the spotlight as top scorer in Belgium and all of Europe in the first half of the current season, the former FC Midtjylland of Denmark towering striker has gained another level of attention after his No. 18 jersey at Genk was sold for 1,600 Euro. The sale occurred at a special auction organised by officials of the Belgian Jupiler Pro League, during which Onuachu made headlines when his top ended up as the fourth most expensive jersey at the event that was staged as a Christmas campaign. The special campaign, which was also organized to support the Belgian league’s social partner, eventually garnered a record 145,000 Euro, with the most expensive jersey being that of Club Brugge attacker, Charles De Ketelaere, which was bought for 4,100 Euro. Four other players from Emmanuel Dennis Bonaventure and David Chidozie Okoreke’s club, who are current Belgium champions, made the top 10 most expensive jerseys at the auction, but Onuachu was the only Nigerian on the charts and fourth overall among the lot on offer. It is another fillip to Onuachu’s growing image, as he ended the year 2020 as the joint-highest goals scoring Nigerian player in the world, as the FC Ebedei of Shagamu product’s tally of 17 in the Belgian First Division A is the same with FC Prishtina of Kosovo rising star, Otto John. Onuachu netted 15 goals in the current season and his other two were against Royal Antwerp and KV Oostende before the previous campaign was halted in March as a result of the onset of coronavirus pandemic. On the other hand, John registered his name on the scoresheet 10 times in 15 appearances in the Kosovo top-flight in the second half of the 2019-2020 campaign, starting from February, and has continued his brilliant form this term with seven goals from 14 games. Also listed on the scorers’ chart is FC Cologne of Germany attacker, Tolu Arokodare, who earned a deal in the summer transfer window, thanks to 15 goals he hit home for Valmiera of Latvia, which keeps him in third place along with KF Laci’s Kyrian Nwabueze, while Moses Ogbu’s haul of 14 in 25 Swedish Allsvenskan appearances for Mjällby places him fifth on the cards.
