Ridwan 'Scorpion' Set to Defend WBF International Title Against French Boxer By Boluwaji Ogunmola WBF International Super Featherweight Champion, Ridwan “Scorpion” Oyekola, is set to defend his title against France National Title Holder Kevin Escanez on Saturday June 19, 2021, in Ibadan, Nigeria. Ridwan “Scorpion” Oyekola oupunched his Argentinian co-challenger Lucas Matias Montesino in December 2020, to capture the vacant World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Super Featherweight title, in a bout organized by Core Afrique Boxing Promotions at the Ilaji Hotel & Sports Resort, Ibadan. The June fight against Marseille born Kevin looks promises to be an explosive encounter. The 23-year-old local hero with 7-1-1 record as a professional is expected to trade punches with his more experienced 31 year old challenger, Escanez, who has 8-3-1 record. Ridwan Oyekola captured the Nigerian title in April of 2019 with a first round demolition of Taofik Bisuga. Against Montesino, Oyekola scored a knock-down in the second round, but a tough-as-they-come Montesino beat the count of referee Eddie Marshal and came back strong, often giving as good as he got, making almost every round close and hard to decide. However, after ten rounds of toe-to-toe action, judges Bertin Adohn, Olusegun Adesanya and May Mensah Akakpo all had the fight clearly in favour of Oyekola: 97-92, 98-91 and 98-91. Oyekola won deservedly, but the scores, while likely fair, didn't reflect the closeness of the fight. After the thrilling fight to win the World Boxing Federation (WBF) International Super Featherweight title on December 27, Nigerian Ridwan ”Scorpion” Oyekola emerged the WBF Boxer of the Month for December 2020. The promoter and manager of the boxer, Sola Ayodele who owns Core Afrique Boxing Promotion (COABOX) has assured fans of Ridwan that the boxer will go all the way to successfully defend the title. “We are confident Ridwan will successfully defend the title against Kevin as he has been training hard and will travel to Ghana next month to intensify his training ahead of the title defence”, the COABOX boss added.
