Rodgers wants two new strikers to compete with Senior Man "Iheanacho"

Rodgers – Leicester City could have two new strikers to compete with Kelechi Iheanacho by the time Jamie Vardy’s career at the club ends, but manager Brendan Rodgers insists that won’t be any time soon in spite of the number nine’s goal drought, BSNSports.com.ng gathered. Vardy’s latest blank at West Ham means he has scored just one goal in 18 appearances for City since Christmas, but it has not had an impact on the club’s results, with Iheanacho in incredible form to net nine goals in six games. Iheanacho’s latest double brought him level with Vardy on 14 for the season, while his rate of fire earned a new three-year deal at the start of the month. But he’s not being lined up as Vardy’s sole successor, with Rodgers saying he would at least want to sign at least one new striker to compete with Iheanacho, maybe even two. Preparations for the winding-down of Vardy’s career – the number nine’s contract ends in 2023, when he will be 36 – could see City make a move for a forward this summer, with Celtic’s Odsonne Edouard on their radar. “What we’re saying is we think he’s going to be an important striker for us in the future,” Rodgers said of Iheanacho’s contract. “You need more than one, that’s for sure. “He’s shown in the couple of years I’ve been here that he’s developing and improving, and is going to be a very important part of the squad. “But there’s no doubt that later down the line, when Jamie is finished, we will have to have another one, maybe two. Any top club will want to have more than one and that will always be the case. “What’s great with Kels is we’ve seen his confidence grow. Playing now, he looks a real threat and he looks like he can score goals. And being young, we know there is a lot more to come.” Iheanacho’s goal-scoring form means Rodgers has no concerns over Vardy’s dry spell – a run of one goal in 18 games – firstly because his team are still finding the net, and secondly because his talisman is still contributing. “Kels is in that moment where he’s scoring regularly and the ball’s dropping to him,” Rodgers said after Iheanacho’s brace at West Ham. “In the second half he (Vardy) was moving much freer, running, working in behind, working the back-line better, but just never had too many opportunities. It happens. “All I ever ask of the strikers whether they are scoring or not is to be aggressive, run, and work, and Jamie will always look to give that to the team.”
