Rohr Charges Flying Eagles To Qualify For Next Year’s U20 AFCON

Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has given a massive charge to players and coaches of Nigeria’s youth national team, Flying Eagles, urging them to ensure they qualify for next year’s African U-20 Cup of Nations in Mauritania. BSNSports.com.ng can report that Rohr gave the charge during a surprise visit to the Flying Eagles’ camp in Abuja, during which he spoke at length with the players and exchanged pleasantries with the coaches, led by Isah Ladan Bosso. The Franco-German gaffer used the moment to buttress how important the youth team is to the future of Nigerian football and enjoined them to work even harder in order to get a successful outing at the upcoming West African Union (WAFU) B zonal qualifiers. Although the competition is bound to have a new date and venue, after Togo pulled out of their hosting slot on account of worries over coronavirus, Rohr believes Bosso’s side will hold their own anywhere and anytime, hence his verdict that they should return home with the ticket in the kitty. The WAFU B zonal qualifiers for the 2021 U20 AFCON was originally scheduled for November 18 to December 2 in Lome, Togo, and Rohr urged the players to stay focused, even as they await a new date and venue for the competition. While anxiety and anticipation lingers in the youth national team’s camp, Rohr’s visit and morale-boosting words came barely 24 hours after Bosso’s side thrashed Horvel Prime Academy 4-0 in a build-up friendly played in Abuja on Thursday. The match, which was part of preparations for the Flying Eagles ahead of the now postponed qualifiers, was the team’s third friendly, having earlier recorded equally impressive wins in their previous two games, and the media unit of Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) highlighted expected benefits of Rohr’s visit, which was described as an encouraging one. The NFF posted: “Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr today visited the Flying Eagles during the evening training session. Rohr gave the team moral support and encouraged them to do the nation proud by qualifying for the U20 Africa Cup of Nations. #SoarFlyingEagles #team9jastrong.”
