Super Eagles’ coach, Gernot Rohr has come out with an explanation of the reason behind his decision to line his side out on the training pitch for an hour and 38 minutes, BSNSports.com.ng reports.
Speaking against the backdrop of enquiries raised by fans and journalists after seeing the Eagles sweat it out under the raging sun at Teslim Balogun Stadium in Surulere, Lagos, Rohr admitted it was a pretty long session for the lads, but added that he needed to see the level of their physicality.
It was the first full training the team would embark upon since the players started arriving from their various bases on Monday and some even on Tuesday, while Leicester City of England’s back-to-form attacker, Kelechi Iheanacho linked up with the squad on Wednesday morning.
That paved the way for a fitness check from Rohr, who decided to drag his wards to the limit and, afterwards, the Franco-German tactician declared that he was satisfied with the session and confirmed that the players are not carrying any injuries before their trip to Cotonou on Friday.
Rohr submitted: “The training was okay. It was a long training, because we still have the time to recover, so we wanted to physically work hard. The weather was good so we could do one hour and 38 minutes, which is a long time for a training session.
“We didn’t train this morning so we could do more this afternoon. We are satisfied about the pitch, they worked very well on it and now we can play football on this pitch.”
