Rohr Speaks On Invitation of NPFL Players
By Niyi Busari
Super Eagles manager, Gernot Rohr has said that the fact that Nigeria Professional Football League players can not compete favourably with their foreign counterparts is the main reason he hardly invite some of the exceptional domestic players into the Super Eagles, BSNSports.com.ng can report.
He revealed that he has invited 24 home based players into the senior national team since he assumed office as the head coach. The invitation to 24 home based players, according to him, has helped them secured contracts with foreign clubs.
Rohr, 66, argued that unlike the picture being painted by many, inviting 24 players to Super Eagles is fair enough considering the quality of players in the local leagues.
"I've invited about 24 local players since I was appointed. Funnily, most of them get a contract in Europe almost immediately." Rohr said.
He however, said that it is difficult for home based players to displace their foreign based counterparts in the present Super Eagles squad, adding that Championship of African Football (CHAN) competition is orgainsed by CAF for the home based as a platform to prove their abilities to be invited to the main team.
"It's difficult getting local players who are better than the ones we already have. That's why CHAN is important."
