Rohr Speaks On Mikel, Chukwueze Chances Of Making It To 2019 AFCON

Super Eagles manager Gernot Rohr has hinted John Mikel Obi will not be part of his AFCON squad, though he still plans to meet the Middlesbrough midfielder before naming his squad. Mikel has not played for the Eagles since Nigeria went out of the World Cup in Russia.
According to dailyadvent, though Rohr believes Mikel remains an important player in the team, he points to the fact the team qualified for the AFCON without him. He added there’s so many things to consider before he decides if the 31-year-old will be part of his squad.
When asked if he’s considering including the former Chelsea midfielder in his AFCON squad; “This is the question that I and my team will resolve. I will soon go to see him at Boro.
There are many things to consider but I respect him & what he has done for Nigeria. He remains an important player.” Rohr told renowned sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana.
“He has been away from the team for a year but we qualified for the AFCON without him. His absence, as our captain, has been evident. But he has had to deal with a range of issues, after the World Cup in Russia.”
The former Gabon manager was also asked about Villarreall’s Samuel Chuwkwueze who is another player causing a lot of argument in the Nigeria’s sports sphere. The 19-year-old has been a revelation for the Yellow Submarines in his debut season, scoring Five goals in seventeen league appearances.
His form this season has caught the attention of a host European clubs including title chasing side Liverpool and Manchester City who are willing to pay his 54m pounds buy out clause.
However, despite his performances, it is unlikely he makes Rohr’s nations cup squad due to his likely involvement with the U-20 Eagles. Though Rohr would love to have him in his squad, he stressed he would not be an immediate starter should he make his squad.
When asked about Chukwueze: “You seem to know all my present challenges,” “He is a great talent and I would like him in my team, although I don’t know if he will be an immediate starter. The challenge, of course, is that he is also wanted for Nigeria’s FIFA U-20 team going to Poland…”
“I have had a chat with the coach of Villarreal and they don’t want him to exhaust himself at the U-20 World Cup and the AFCON, so they want him to choose one tournament. We shall see how best we can manage this situation. But no doubt, he’s a talent for my team.”
