Sheffield Wednesday hoping to land Efe Ambrose, BSNSports.com.ng has learnt.

Sheffield Wednesday are looking to sign defender Efe Ambrose on a free transfer.

The 30-year-old is now a free agent after exercising a clause in his contract to leave Hibernian earlier this month.

He is now weighing up his options and is a target for Sheffield Wednesday. Their new boss, Steve Bruce, hasn’t officially taken charge of the Owls yet but is still keen for the club to strengthen their defence in this transfer window.

Ambrose, who is a Nigerian international with 51 caps to his name, is experienced and has played over 300 games so far in his career.

He started out in Nigeria with spells at Kaduna United, Bayelsa United before moving to Israeli side F.C. Ashdod in 2010.

Scottish Premiership side Celtic then snapped him up after he spent two seasons in Israel.

Ambrose became a key player for the Glasgow giants and played over 150 games for them. He helped the Hoops win the League twice four times, the Scottish Cup and the League Cup.

He moved out on loan to Hibernian in February 2017 and was part of their side who won promotion from the Scottish Championship. Ambrose later signed a contract with the Edinburgh side but has ran that one down now.

He would give Sheffield Wednesday more back-up and options in defence. Ambrose will want to prove that he can play at Championship level and could turn out to be a shrewd signing for the Owls if he joins them.
