Simy: “Kanu Is My Idol”

  In-form Crotone striker, Simeon Tochukwu Nwankwo who is more commonly known and addressed to as ‘Simy’ has revealed that fellow Nigerian compatriot and Arsenal legend, Nwankwo Kanu is his football idol, BSNSports.com.ng reports. Simy is in the best form of his career in the Serie A, scoring in five consecutive matches to take his tally to fifteen goals for the 2020/21 season in the league alone. When asked to reveal the striker he’s inspired by, Simy told Tuttomercatoweb.com : “Kanu, my old idol. He has won wherever he has played. Ajax, Arsenal, Inter, Portsmouth. “For me Kanu is everything: it is my point of reference, my inspiration. After the illness he had – when he was at Inter – and which he overcame, he returned to win with Arsenal and it is a special thing.” Simy only on Wednesday expressed his pride to have played a total number of 150 matches across all competitions for Crotone since joining the Italian club-side. And that is five years after the striker’s arrival from Gil Vicente FC in Portugal. His appearance against Napoli last weekend took him to 150 games for the Sharks across all competitions. The Nigerian international has recorded 73 appearances in the Serie A, played 70 matches in the Serie B and seven in the Coppa Italia, scoring 61 goals across the five seasons for Crotone. Simy is currently drawing the attention of a host of top clubs in Europe such as the Belgian First Division A and French Ligue 1. Also according to La Gazzetta dello Sport via Tuttomercatoweb, Simy has the interest of Genoa who are actually interested in signing the Nigerian striker this very summer. Reacting to the speculation, the Nigerian attacker said : “It’s not something that interests me, I’m a Crotone player and I’m very proud of that. “I’ve been here for five years, from the first moment I felt at home and I can’t think of anything else. “I have a contract with Crotone, I am calm and I am very happy to be part of this club.”
