St Murumba College Celebrates Akwuegbu, Odegbami, Mbah, Mancha, P. Square

In celebration of their 60th anniversary, St. Mulumba College, Jos, on Saturday honored Nigeria football superstars in a novelty match in Plateau state, BSNSports.com.ng can report.

In the warm-up match, Nigeria football icon, Chief Segun Odegbami, on Saturday, November 16, 2019, replicated the skills that saw him help the Green Eagles win the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations in Lagos with an emphatic 3-0 thumping of Algeria in the final when he filed out for his alma mater
against Plateau All Stars in a Novelty football match, commemorating the school’s 60th anniversary celebration.

Odegbami, nicknamed ‘Mathematical’ since his illustrious playing career, have Ben Akwuegbu; 2013 AFCON winner, Sunday Mbah and Patrick Mancha as his St Mulumba Old Boys Association, (SMOBA) International Stars squad that played against Plateau All Stars at the famous secondary school’s football pitch.

Odegbami, Akwuegbu, Patrick Mancha and Sunday Mbah, among other top players that have represented Nigeria at various levels, had their secondary education at the famous St Mulumba College, Jos.

It was gathered that the five-day event marking the 60th Anniversary celebration kicked off on Wednesday, November 13 with a road walk/awareness campaign from Standard Junction, Jos, to the college where a press conference was held by the organisers.

That was followed up on Thursday with a church service and Medical Outreach.

The events marking the ceremony came to a fitting end on Sunday with the presence of Plateau State Governor, His Excellency, Simon Lalong, under the chairmanship of the Executive Secretary, TETFUND, Prof Suleiman Elia Uhuru.

Most Rev. Ignatius Kaigama, Apostolic Administrator of Jos Diocese is slated to be the Chief Host.

“There was also an award night where distinguished personalities were recognised for their contributions to humanity.

“Besides, these players who are products of the school and who have proved to be great ambassadors of the school honoured on the final day of the anniversary,” organisers said in a statement.

It would be recalled that Odegbami and Sunday Mbah won the Nations Cup with the Eagles in 1980 and 2013 respectively, while Patrick Mancha and Benedict Akwuegbu represented Nigeria at both the youth and senior national team levels.

Akwuegbu won the Africa Cup of Nations silver in 2000 and starred for several clubs in Europe including Stum Graz of Australia where he was nicknamed ‘Austria Bomber’ because of his consistency in goal scoring.

Akwuegbu was also the first Nigerian player to secure a contract in Belgium.
