Tammy Abraham Eager To Capitalise On Chelsea Transfer Ban To Become First-Choice

Striker Tammy Abraham is determined to capitalise on Chelsea's transfer ban and realise his dream of becoming a first-choice striker at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against the punishment handed to them in April. But as things stand, they will not be allowed to make signings for the next two windows and that could present opportunities for their young players.

Abraham is a product of Chelsea's academy but he has spent the last two years out on loan — helping Aston Villa win promotion to the Premier League in May after scoring 26 goals in the Championship season. Villa would happily take the 21-year-old back for another campaign if he is allowed to be part of the squad for the 2019/20 season.

But with doubts over the future of Gonzalo Higuaín — who had an underwhelming six months on loan from Juventus — Abraham recognises there is potential for him to make an impact. He intends to cut short his summer break and is out to make an impression.

'That's how all the young players at the club are looking at it,' said Abraham, who will start for England's Under 21s in their final Euro 2019 game against Croatia on Monday night. 'There is a great chance for us, so we must get our heads down in training and go for it. 'I have already been talking to the club about pre-season. I'm going to have a couple of weeks and then come back hitting the ground running. I really do feel I am ready for the Premier League. There is no better time for a young player to be at Chelsea. I am going to give it my all.

'This year is the most important year for us. It is now or never. There will never be a better time to play the youngsters.

"The transfer ban is not what the club wanted but for us it is exciting. I am excited and I am sure the rest of the players are.' The likelihood is that Frank Lampard will be the new man in charge. Abraham's cause will also be helped if Jody Morris returns to Stamford Bridge — with the indication that highly-regarded development squad manager Joe Edwards will be given a more senior role. 'If it was him (Lampard) to take over the job, it would be great,' said Abraham. 'I believe in myself and there is no better guy to play under as well: someone you have grown up watching, been at Chelsea forever. Jody has also coached me in the younger age groups, so it is all positives."
