Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Mikel Obi Urges Team Nigeria Athletes To Win Gold By Uche Dozie Former Nigeria International player, John Obi Mikel has urged team Nigeria athletes to go for gold as they prepare for the Olympic Games coming up in Tokyo next month, BSNSports.com.ng reports. Mikel, in a dinner organised by the sport ministry with the athletes spoke to inspire them on Sunday evening at the Southern Sun hotel, Ikoyi, Lagos. ”I am happy to be in the midst of you guys. I know you are going to a major tournament which I have been to and I know what it takes to be there and to compete there and to try to win something for our great nation,’ said the former dream team player. ”It’s my pleasure to be here tonight to wish you guys all the best and hopefully, you will bring back all the gold medals at the Olympics,’ Mikel added. The former Chelsea star is reported to have been appointed as an ambassador in the sport ministry. The Stoke City midfielder captained Nigeria to a bronze medal finish in the football event at the 2016 Rio Olympics. thenicheng.com reports that three former Olympic medalists Falilat Ogunkoya, Mary Onyali and Enefiok Udobong were present with athletes like African long jump record holder Ese Brume, sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan, sprinters Ushoritse Itsekiri, Grace Nwokocha, Favour Ofili, Amarachukwu Obi and throwers Oyesade Olatoye, Chukwuebuka Enekwechi, Chioma Onyekwere and Dotun Ogundeji.
