The Nigeria side was forced to a 1-1 draw by Junior Elephants of Cote d'Ivoire in the opening group game despite scoring first. The first half against Ghana was keenly contested and Nigeria dominated the possession but failed to convert their chances in front of goal. Nigeria has a goal scored in the first stanza by Wisdom Ubani but was disallowed by the centre referee for offside positioning. The second half resumed with Nigeria still dominating the game but it was Ghana that broke the deadlock in the 82nd minute through a free-kick . All the efforts of Flying Eagles to level the game proved abortive as Ghana defenders stood their ground through out the game.
