UCL Timo Werner at the double as Chelsea thumps 10-man Rennes

Chelsea took firm control of their Champions League Group after brushing aside French side Rennes 3-0 at Stamford Bridge in their third match of the campaign on Wednesday night.  Timo Werner scored a brace from the spot in the first half before Tammy Abraham sealed the win in the second period. Coach Frank  Lampard made a single change to his starting team, with Jorginho replacing Kai Havertz in midfield after he tested positive for COVID-19. It took the Blues 10 minutes to open the scores, with Werner easily converting from the spot after he was hacked down by Henrique Dalbert. The Blues took full control of the game, but could not add to their tally until the 38th  minute when another penalty decision went in their favour. It was a controversial one though as Dalbert's handball seemed unintentional, but the referee, after a  long VAR review pointed to the spot. It got worse for the French club as  Dalbert was shown his second yellow card, which reduced his side to 10 men. After a review check, the goal was awarded and it all but took the match away from Rennes. Lampard's charges went all out looking for a  fourth, but it never came despite having a number of chances. The win saw them take a comfortable lead at the top on seven points, same as  Sevilla,  who came from a goal down to beat Krasnodar 3-2 at home.
