WAFU U20: Niger, Burkina Faso Pick Semifinal Tickets As Benin Republic, Togo Crash Out
By Niyi Busari
The U20 national teams of Niger Republic and Burkina Faso are through to the semifinals of the ongoing WAFU U20 Zone B tournament in Porto-Novo, Benin Republic, BSNSports.com.ng can report.
Burkina Faso and Niger Republic finished the group unbeaten with five points from three matches (one win and two draws). The hosts, Benin Republic hope of qualifying for the semifinal was shattered by a slim 1-0 win by Burkina Faso on Friday. The hosts had won one and lost one before the last group A match but failure to secure a win against Burkina Faso ended their dream of playing at the CAF U20 Nations Cup in Mauritania in 2021.
In the second group game, Togo who were at the bottom of the table with one point before the Friday's match needed a win to secure the semifinal ticket but their efforts could only get them a 1-1 draw.
With the results, Burkina Faso edged Niger Republic to finish top of group A table on goal aggregate (+2) as both sides have 5 points each.
Meanwhile, in group B, the outcome of today's match between Ghana and Cote d'Ivoire will determine Nigeria's hope.
While Ghana has already qualified with three points, thanks to their 1-0 win over Nigeria on Wednesday, the Junior Elephants who had played a 1-1 draw with Nigeria in the group opener, need at least a draw in today's match to pick the second semifinal ticket.
However, a win with more than one goal margin for Ghana means Nigeria replaces Ivory Coast in the semifinal. Nigeria have one point from two matches.
The semifinal matches are scheduled to hold on 15th December, 2020.
