Iceland coach Hallgrimsson: We Can Beat Croatia To Qualify For Second Round
Iceland boss Heimir Hallgrimsson says he is confident his team can overcome Croatia and secure qualification into the round of 16 of this summer’s World Cup despite his side losing 2-0 to Nigeria on Friday.
The World Cup debutants were brought back to earth after their 1-1 draw against Argentina in their debut World Cup game following the loss to Nigeria.
A brace from Ahmed Musa, sealed the impressive win for the Super Eagles who lost 2-0 in their opener against Croatia last weekend.
And commenting on his team’s defeat, Hallgrimsson said they would be banking on their previous impressive record against Croatia come Tuesday.
“It’s a strange fact that we are still in the race,” he said in his post-match press conference.
“We didn’t think we would go through this World Cup without a loss and losses are always difficult to swallow. But we only need to beat Croatia, which is possibly easier to say than do.
“We’ve played Croatia four times in four years and we’ve often said we’re like a married couple trying to get divorced but we always meet up again.
“They’ve had two really, really good performances in the World Cup. The last one was a shining example of how good Croatia is but that also gives us confidence because we were ahead of them in our [qualifying] group and have already beaten them once in Iceland.”
