Why Super Eagles Should Be Wary of Sierra Leone Today
By Omolagba Oluwayemi
The Super Eagles of Nigeria will today play Leone of Sierra Leone in an Afcon qualifier with no fans at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium Benin City by 5pm.
Taking a look at how football have shaped since the lockdown where fans have not been allowed into stadiums, we've seen many shocking results has small teams have been able to expressed themselves confidently even away from their home.
Most matches from last season have looked like friendly without fans in the stadium and all grounds have looked like a neutral venue.
Just last weekend, Aston Villa shocked Arsenal at the Emirates by 3-0, weeks after they dismantled English League Champions, Liverpool 7-2.
We've seen United and Tottenham lost more points at home this season than they've done on the road, in fact, Manchester United have only picked one point at home out of possible 12 while Leicester City and Tottenham have picked the maximum 12 points on the road and so many other surprises since the start of football without fans.
Smaller teams now play with less pressure, with more confidence no matter the venue and Super Eagles of Nigeria needs to be aware of this.
The Ogbemudia Stadium is more like an away ground for Super Eagles without fans because this is the first time they'll be playing there, so both Nigeria and Sierra Leone will be playing there for the very first time which makes it more dicey for Nigeria.
Going into this game, Super Eagles players and coaches should know that Sierra Leone will play with confidence and won't come here to defend but to attack. They'll play with the belief that they can equally get the 3 points here since they'll be no fans to intermediate them in the stadium.
One of the things the Nigerian team must also be careful of is not taking their chances which we saw in their last two friendly games against Algeria and Tunisia which could be very dangerous in a time like this.
It's no doubt going to be an end to end game and I maintain my stance that Sierra Leone won't defend but will rather want to enforce their dangerous attacking styles on the Eagles so the defense should at no moment go to sleep today.
I wish the Super Eagles the very best
