Wolves tear Spurs to shreds at Wembley!
By Lord Verbinsky
Tottenham's title hopes suffered a damaging blow as Wolves came from behind to win 3-1 at Wembley.
Spurs had looked like piling the pressure on leaders Liverpool in the Premier League title race after Harry Kane celebrated his new year MBE in style with a brilliant first-half strike.
But Wolves had other ideas and enjoyed a memorable first visit to the new national stadium as goals from Willy Boly, Raul Jimenez and Helder Costa in the final 18 minutes gave them a deserved three points.
It was a game too far for Spurs, whose relentless run of fixtures finally caught up with them, and they could now end the weekend nine points behind Jurgen Klopp's side.
A memorable year ended on a sour note for Kane, but his achievements in 2018 deserve acknowledging.
Having defied all possible odds thus far this season, Pochetino's Spurs have made light meal of virtually every team placed before them including Manchester United despite not making a single signing this season, so it was both impressive and unprecedented to not only see them sitting pretty at the 2nd spot on the log but most shocking was the fact that they were above Manchester City going into today's game at home to Wolves
Wolves is also another team that have been quietly going about their business, gradually earning a reputation for themselves as a 'Portuguese' team not to be underestimated. They too have accrued points from fixtures one would traditionally expect them to hand out maximum points to the opposition like an ATM
Despite the positives on both teams, at the blast of the whistle today, nobody must have been ready for the drama that was to unfold (no matter how many times we see such shock in the league, it always feels like the first time as they usually appear out of nowhere).
Wolves succeeded in destroying the fragile title contention dreams and momentum of Spurs today, reminding them of the reasons why they have never won the league and why the EPL is not a league for dreamers but for those who are willing to work round the clock with maximum concentration till the very end
Spurs looked a jaded outfit by the end as an impressive 2018 ended with a poor result.
