Women's Football: Russia likely to be replaced by Portugal at Euro 2022

Russia are poised to be replaced by Portugal in this summer's Euro 2022, after FIFA and UEFA confirmed that the country has been banned from international football indefinitely, BSNSports.com.ng gathered.   International economic penalties on Russia have already been imposed in response to the military assault, with sporting measures now beginning to follow.   FIFA has been chastised for initially permitting Russia to conduct men's 2022 World Cup qualification on neutral soil and without the use of the Russian flag or national anthem. The stronger worldwide blanket ban on Russian football also applies to European club football, which means UEFA will also ban Spartak Moscow from the Europa League.   Portugal, who were defeated by the Russians in a qualifying playoff, will now take their position.   Russia has participated in five of the previous six Women's European Championships, including the last three in 2009, 2013, and 2017. However, they have never progressed beyond the group stage and have only won one of the 15 games they have played.   Portugal qualified for Euro 2017, their first and yet only appearance in a major women's international competition.     The Portuguese are expected to replace Russia in Group C, which also contains Switzerland, Sweden, and the defending Euro winners the Netherlands.
