Wupa House Win GSS Gwagwalda Inter-house Sports By Wale Ayeni, Abuja Wupa House has emerged overall winners of the 23rd annual Inter-House sports competition of Government Secondary School, (GSS) Gwagwalada Abuja. After several hours of competition in various sporting events which saw staff as well as parents participating in novelty contests, Wupa house garnered 555 points to emerged champions of the yearly sports fiesta. The competition which involved eight houses and held at the school's premises saw Abuja (544) and Lower Usman (507) House came 2nd and 3rd respectively. Speaking after the keenly contest, the chairman of the occasion, Eng Oladapo Olaide Mohammed, who doubles as chairman FCT Golf Association, commended the school for engaging the students in sporting activities, saying it would help build character, and encourage healthy rivalry among the students. He applauded both academic and non-academic staff of the school for bringing up the children with excellence in academics, high moral standard and the fear of God. “I have no doubt that GSS Gwagalada is rated as one of the best schools in the FCT. This is because the students are doing well both in academics and moral conduct. The teachers are professionals and well trained in all ramifications he said. In his speech, the Principal of the School, Dr Muhammed Sani Ladan, called on parents to encourage their wards to actively participate in sports in a bid to keep them healthy as well as provide them with a platform to make a career out of it. He said the school remained committed to promoting sporting activities as it was key in ensuring the mental development and academic progress of teenagers. He, however, noted that the decision of the school to develop skills and talents among the children that will make them excel in future motivated the management to embark on the annual event. On his part, the Parent Teacher Association (P.T.A) chairman Alhaji Hassan Isah applauded the effort of the school in training young and talented athletes, while urging the students to continue in building their career in education and sports so that they can represent the country in the future tournament.
